Projects and Accomplishments

2009-2010 Focus

Cementing and expanding the relationship between Appalachian State and the English Focus Group. We would also like to foster a closer relationship between Appalachian State University and the English Departments of each of our partner schools.

The English Professional Learning Community has discussed/completed the following during the 2007-08 school year:

  1. Worked to establish a cooperative relationship with the faulty of the ASU English Department.
  2. Wrote a mini-grant to help fund a dinner for the ASU English Department faculty so that we might meet and exchange ideas.
  3. Shared ideas and methods for various types of assessment, particularly portfolios.
  4. Hosted the dinner meeting with ASU faculty in February. This was a huge success and gave us many ideas and insights. We believe it was also a great help to the ASU faculty.
  5. Met with Georgia Rhodes to discuss the Writing Across the Curriculum program. We plan to get with her later to form a group which will grade student writing and discuss further ways to implement WAC.
  6. Met with Dr. Atkinson to discuss a possible weekend seminar during the summer of ¹09. Dr. Atkinson wanted our input about possible texts he should use for public school teachers. He was thinking about Things Fall Apart, but we suggested we might want to do something that would expose us to Asian or Middle Eastern culture.
