Welcome/Approval of Minutes Betty Terrell Ms. Kathy Howell was welcomed as a new member and Assistant to Dr. Linda McCalister. She has 32 years as a teacher, and recently retired from Ashe County as an English teacher. The minutes were approved as written. Drive In Creating the Write Environment Betty Terrell Is being held today at 4:00 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. We have 120 scheduled participants and three sessions dividing the Elementary, Middle and High School levels. Write for the Future Workshop Betty Terrell The Write for the Future Workshop is scheduled for 1/22 and 1/26/07 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. Ms. Melba Johnson is the guest speaker and her book will be distributed to attendees. Both Ms. Johnsons fee and the books are of considerable cost, so Council members are asked to remind the teachers to attend the event. ESL Drive in Workshop (Reaching the English Language Learner in Your Classroom: Cultural Understanding Betty Terrell This event will be held on February 22nd at the Stone Performing Arts Center (behind Wilkes Co. Schools) from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. It is intended for the regular classroom teacher and will focus on cultural understand / awareness. The Council members voiced that they believed this would be very well attended. Bobby Ashley volunteered that he would be the focal point if the Council wanted to have outside vendors at the ESL workshop. Members quickly called out several recommended sources and Betty Terrell asked that they e-mail their sources on the Quick Topic sites. Professional Development Opportunities Kay Campany Kay Campany distributed a handout regarding the Professional Development Opportunities which will be addressed this summer specifically Middle Grades Science, High School Biology and Geometry. For additional information, contact ASUs Math and Science Center. Partnership Web-site Linda McCalister The Public School Partnership Web-site was presented to the Coordinating Council, including the Calendar, Governing Board site, Professional Development Schools, Grant Opportunities, and many educational links including Discovery Science and United streaming. Dr. McCalister explained that many small grant possibilities existed which did not require significant writing efforts. Kay Campany suggested that Donors Choose be added to the site as an excellent source of funding. Linda asked that further suggestions come to her through e-mail. Items for Next Month Betty Terrell SIOP. What should we focus on next year? What speakers would be a good fit? It was requested that in next months council meeting members be allowed to view the evaluations from the workshops. Both Ralph Fletcher and Marcia Tate were mentioned as possible speakers. Kathy Howell will be investigating the feasibility of these two visitors. Kay Campany brought up the Core Requirements which are now being discussed by the State Board of Education. All concerned with these new requirements showed concern. It is anticipated that the pendulum will swing again from being able to afford music / art teachers and being only able to afford the required academic teachers. Math and Foreign Language requirements are increasing, as well as other areas. Enough concern was voiced that Linda suggested she invite Jane Norwood, Tom Speed and others from the State Board of Education to attend next months Coordinating Council. It was also suggested that the council offer some sort of proposal whereby we appear to be meeting the State Board part way. It was felt that this was a more positive approach than presenting a negative attitude towards the entire change. Also suggested for the invite list was the superintendents and someone from ASUs Foreign Language department. Science Inquiry Judy Sink Ms. Judy Sink informed the council that there would be a workshop next fall with a focus on K-6 Note booking in Science. This event will be sponsored by both the Public School Partnership and the Math/Science Center. It is at least three days long with a time period between each day to work on what the participants have learned to date. Judy passed out an informative Power Point presentation regarding the goals and positive outcomes of notebooking. In addition, a sample journal was distributed having belonged to a 3rd grade girl. Notebooking increases organization and learning in science, but has the additional attribute of significantly improving students writing skills. The meeting adjourned at 2:45 pm. 7ACIJQRco~# $ R S T o q r s z [ \ ] L M N ~ 5 E F v ڼzuzpi hRhR h|5 hR5hRh|5h|h5}h5}5 h5}5hh[h h."h h#w5 h5 hMZ5 h."h%evh#w h."h=6h#v' hSi1h=6h."h=65h."hP5hm[ h."h&h5}h5}H*h5} h."hP(7JRdnoS T \ ] M N ~ F * & Fgd|gd| & Fgd5}gd5} & Fgdgd & FgdPgdP$a$gd>$a$gdP-v { )\zu 78=>789KLYZhj| #'(,ēēhV'h9hJ hBF h_h_ hkd5hkdhkd5hkdhbh]h>h35h3h\hhAh h."h+Nhxh+N5 h5 h;5hvehhRhR5 hRhRhR2*z78>89YZ & Fgdkdgdkd & Fgdb & Fgd]gd3 & Fgd\gd+Ngd]gdR & Fgd| ,-gdxgd9 & Fgdkd,-hxhx5,1h/ =!"#$% @@@ PNormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k(No List6U@6 ;?
