Position focuses on lateral entry and licensure DPI Restructuring of all programs to be turned into the State by Fall 2009 Standards have changed substantially and virtually affects every graduate and undergraduate department Faculty Positions Approximately half of the positions are filled Media Conference David Considine Explained Free Staff Development program for NC History & Social Studies Teachers Held at Boone Campus July 21st -24th Large mailing was done but need your help spreading the word and encouraging your teachers to attend Handouts given detailing the event along with the registration form There will be free multi-media curriculum kits available to participants who complete 10 or 20 contact hours Beginning Teachers Network Alice Kruger Working to connect ASU Faculty with teachers in the classroom Tried Face book and did not work Setting up Pre-K as pilot group for face to face dinner between Faculty and Teachers If successful will then use modal for on-line support at a later date Teacher Supply Sale went fantastic Watauga County donated 400 books Special Topics Summer Course Enhancing Classroom Practice (handout) Grade-Level and ELL Conference (handout) A day long conference for all beginning 1st year teachers in our partnership Give examples of problems and ways to solve them Math Science Center Phillip Johnson Discussed Professional Development thru the Math & Science Education Center (handout) Major new series of institutes for mathematics and science teachers which aligns with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study Any Teacher (in the Partnership) with fully paid registration can bring another teacher free of charge (excluding MELT classes) Can also pay for the upcoming summer classes in the next fiscal year Cooperating Teacher Training Nancy Reeves Dates set for June 17 and 18, 2008 at the Library on the ASU campus $25.00 registration fee which includes the program, housing, meals and prizes Addresses 21st century student teacher needs Best practices for co-teaching Encourage one office person to attend Committee Report Betty Terrell Planning Committee met April 11th and came up with 3 recommendations for Professional Development Guest Speaker Chip Brady Teaching US History Critical Thinking (Nancy has contact info) - EC/ELL Issues K-12 Bob Iseminger - Marzano / Differentation Across the Board Council voted and agreed that US History needs the most help system wide Volume of US History required courses is growing must get grades up Chip Brady lectures on Critical Thinking and DPI focuses on Concept Based Instruction maybe we could contact Chip and ask if he could direct his lecture toward a blend of Critical/Concept Could SS Focus Group develop series of structured meetings and lesson plans based on Chips presentation? General Comments Committee Schools need to put aside money for teachers to attend Math/Science summer workshops When PLCs complete a product to hand out to schools before sending have PLC member present to the Coordinating Council for approval and the council will distribute thoughout the school system. Donna from East Burke High School state they are experimenting with a joint US History/ English class for slower students. English Teacher sits in on History portion of the class and then pulls reading materials to match the History lesson.
