Proposed dropping GPA to 2.5 for admissions ASU will not accept this Must have 2.5 GPA for licensure Restructuring of all programs to be turned into the State by Fall 2008 Begin implementation 2010 Begin assessment of new programs 2012 -2013 Shift in University thinking More emphasis on research More emphasis trying to address economic needs of the region Higher expectations for teachers for scholarships Within the next 6 months there will be a major report responding to citizens around the State public opinion and recommendations Some recommendations will be at local level and others at State level Teacher Warranty Program renamed Teacher Quality Assurance Program In summation If an ASU student graduates from an ASU approved teacher education program and is recommended for licensure should encounter instructional difficulties during his or her first 2 years of teaching and remediation of these instructional difficulties extends beyond the assistance normally provided by the districts induction program and support services, ASU agrees, under specified conditions of this program, to assist the teacher in attempting to achieve a satisfactory level of performance at no cost to the beginning teacher or the employing school district. In essence, ASU stands behind our graduates and will be there to help. Notification process? Either student or District may contact ASU If student calls, ASU would notify district immediately and ASU would sit down with Superintendent, mentor and graduate student and devise a plan to resolve issues(s) Very positive response from Superintendents When can we start? Donnie has two potential teachers that may need our help. Dean needs to get approval from Board and have attorney look at the document before announcing in process. Hopefully by the end of the semester QAP could be in effect. GOAL: Keep effective teachers in the system Future Problem Solving Program Sandy Horton Showed very informative video describing new method of teaching Program for gifted and non-gifted, kids must work together to solve the problem Teaches how to think not what to think Stimulates creative thinking, community problem solving Six step problem solving model Sandy asked that any interested parties sign up for the North Carolina Future Problem Solving Program Math Science Center Phillip Johnson Just finished the list of 2008 Summer classes being offered (see handout) Science Notebook workshop Very successful, found it best to attend workshop then use what they learn for one month and then come back for another workshop Seminar Series almost finished Science videos made and sent out to schools Cooperating Teacher Training Nancy Reeves for Roma Angel Roma setting up program June 17, 18 and 19 at the Library on the ASU campus Teacher and Student Teacher meeting in a relaxed atmosphere, working together to make sure the class is successful as well as student teacher getting what they need to succeed. Nancy and Roma meeting next week and will have more information for next meeting Ashe HS spearheading this program now, some filming being done. Calendar shows all upcoming meetings PLC Reports HS Science Rachel Lincoln Reading Teaching with a Purpose and discuss one Chapter each month Very positive, Kay set up on-line discussion site on the book. Book is only 4 chapters and is small, can easily be shared among the schools HS Social Studies members out giving presentations. Book ordered Senator Sam Ervin going out to the partnership HS English Loretta Thomas Meeting for the past 2 years Once a year they open their discussions to the public Last semester they did grant writing and two of the grants written got funded MS Science Stephen Sorrell Focus on giving teachers new sources Inquiry based sciences in the age of high based testing Use conferences to gather information and give back to the Partnership MS Language Arts Cogie Reed Created website which touches on different parts of the curriculum. Focused on issues that their group had problems with Writing, testing, EIG This year there are a lot of changes to the group, many people leaving and new members coming in.
