To Parters of the ASU-Public Schools Partnership:
I am writing to let you know about opportunities for professional development for foreign language teachers during July 2007 at Appalachian State University.
This July 9-27 we are hosting a new summer institute for language teachers with a multi-language technology course and one-week modules that flex around teachersÕ schedules. We also offer on-line and regular, on-campus courses in fall and spring and sometimes teach in larger cities (Hickory, Wilkesboro, Asheville, or Winston-Salem).
We believe the combination of intensive summer institutes, on-line and on-campus classes, and the personal attention we give our students help develop teachers who are stronger in their subject area and more effective all around in teaching. We are especially proud of the success of recent graduates with the MA. In the last two years, two graduates achieved National Board Certification after the preparation they received with us.
The enclosed materials give an overview of our two teaching tracks (K-12 and Community College). We regularly enroll practicing teachers in either track and have added an additional, shorter-term option: an 18-hour graduate certificate in French or Spanish, which can be completed in just over a year. You can find full course descriptions and institute information on our web site at: http://www.fll.appstate.edu.
